Divine Humor: Cauliflower and the Salad Bar

My friend Stuart has such a wit. He is really one of the funniest people I know. But if you don’t pay attention, you’d never know it. He mutters these hysterical observations, but he never cracks a smile! You can be having a serious conversation, and he’ll just say stuff from out of nowhere. I have to wonder if he really knows how truly funny he is. And I wonder how many of his jokes I never get. Probably a lot.

That’s where cauliflower comes in. As I mentioned in a previous post, I first noticed the remarkable similarity of a Purkinje cell to an oak tree while driving home from a long night of studying. The Purkinje cell is unique to the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. I didn’t expect later to see a striking resemblance of the cerebellum at the salad bar! Don’t be squeamish—they are far different in composition and makeup, but the similar design is unmistakable, don’t you think? Why is that? Is this just another wild coincidence? I think not. But I do think it’s a little humorous that God would make part of our brain look so remarkably similar to a vegetable. I wonder if he was thinking something like, “Will they catch this one”? Like my friend Stuart, who rarely warns you of his dry humor, I think there is a supreme irony that part of our brain looks like something you’d see on the salad bar!
